McDonald’s Recalls 2.3 Million Hello Kitty Whistles Due to Choking Hazard

McDonald’s has announced a recall of nearly 2.3 million “Hello Kitty Birthday Lollipop” whistles. The toy whistle could pose a choking risk if the pieces detach from each other. McDonalds has already received two reports of children who inhaled the toy into their mouth and coughed out the pieces. One of the two children needed medical attention, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The recalled item is a red whistle that came with the Happy Meal Hello Kitty Birthday Lollipop Toy (No. 6). The toy is a Hello Kitty figurine holding a pink heart-shaped lollipop with red whistle. The toys were distributed in Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals from October through the first week of November for Hello Kitty’s 40th anniversary celebrations.

So far, McDonald’s has recovered 70% of the whistles. The company is also asking customers to “immediately take the whistle away from children,” according to CNN. McDonald’s will be giving away a different toy, yogurt tube or a bag of apples as a substitute.
