The Dangers of Household Cleaning Products
Would you be surprised if you found out that only 7 percent of your household cleaning products adequately disclosed their contents? According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), this is not the only disturbing fact they found in their studies. Not only are companies not disclosing their cleaning products adequately, but 53 percent of cleaning products reviewed contained lung-harming ingredients. The research also found that well-known carcinogens such as formaldehyde and chloroform were found in several cleaners. The EWG also warned that some “green” products had their fair share of harmful ingredients.
Cleaning products were made to make our lives easier, but are they causing more problems? The EWG does suggest several products that are better than most such as Green Shield Organic and Whole Food’s Green Mission brand. The best thing to do when protecting your family and the environment is to use household items such as vinegar, baking soda, lemons, and other items that are less harsh and can serve as multipurpose cleaners or to know exactly what is in the products you are using.
With all the allergies, sicknesses, and diseases that our country has compared to other nations, we may want to consider cutting out some of these products for our overall health and wellness. Make sure you are aware of the ingredients in your household cleaners, and check out www.ewg.org for a list of safe products and products to avoid.
