BMW announces two recalls in one week
A few days after recalling more than 30,000 X5 crossovers for potential brake problems, BMW announced a second safety issue because of a battery cable connector that can fail and cause engines to stall. This issue affects 570,000 vehicles in North America and covers various 3-Series models sold from 2007-2011, 1-Series from 2008-2012, and Z4 roadsters from 2009-2011.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that a fuse box terminal can degrade over time breaking the electrical connection with the trunk mounted battery. If this occurs, the vehicle can lose power suddenly and stall. BMW reports one minor crash as a result of the problem.
BMW will replace the battery cable connector and secure it properly so it doesn’t move while driving. Both this issue and the brake issue will be handled for free. Notices will be sent out to owners in coming weeks.
The earlier recall is a problem with the brake vacuum pump that will leak a small amount of lubricating oil into the hose which could result in loss of power assist braking which could lead to a crash. There have been no reports of collisions or injuries from this issue.
If you are an owner of a BMW you may contact them for information on both recalls at 1-800-525-7417.
