Melton family settles case against GM over faulty ignition switch – Atlanta Business Chronicle
By Ellie Hensley
The Meltons exposed an ignition switch defect that GM (NYSE: GM) failed to warn customers about or fix, and it resulted in the auto giant paying out $35 million in civil fines and recalling millions of vehicles.
The Meltons settled their first lawsuit in September 2013 for $5 million, but later discovered GM had lied under oath and went after the company again, this time suing for fraud.
“One of the most important issues for the Meltons was accountability,” Cooper said in a statement. “This is a company that concealed this defect for years. They wanted to hold GM accountable, and that is what refiling the lawsuit did.”
