In 2013, GM settled a Cobalt case for $5 million, after an expert hired by plaintiffs lawyer Lance Cooper uncovered what GM’s own outside counsel called “bombshell” evidence that the company changed the ignition switch between 2005 and 2008 — “evidence that had eluded GM engineers for years,” Valukas wrote.
