Neutrogena tops worst sunscreen list

Neutrogena rated worst sunscreen for false advertising and toxicity by the Environmental Working Group.

Sunscreen is an essential for everyone in the summer, but some sunscreens do a much better job than others. Some sunscreens can actually cause harm. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has released its 2015 guide to sunscreens. Surprisingly, the worst sunscreen on the list is Neutrogena. EWG faults the sunscreen brand for false advertising and toxicity. The brand claims to be #1 dermatologist recommended sun care brand, yet the ratings with EWG place them in the red zone and worst category.

EWG included in its report some warnings for sunscreens as well as factors they consider when rating. Spray sunscreens can be inhaled and do not always cover the skin properly. Companies will also lie and tell you that they cover 50+ or more. As a consumer you should not trust them. SPF protection tops out at 30 to 50. Sunscreens can also contain Oxybenzone and Retinyl palmitate. Oxybenzone can disrupt the hormone system and cause fertility issues or birth defects. Retinyl palmate can trigger severe damage and cancer. EWG reported that 80 percent of Neutrogena sunscreens contain oxybenzone and 33 percent contain retinyl palmitate.

Some of the other brands rated among the worst spray sunscreens include Banana Boat, Coppertone, and CVS brand. The worst brands for sunscreen lotions include Banana Boat Sport Performance, Coppertone, CVS brand and No-AD Sunscreen. For the full list including the list of best sunscreens, you can check out EWG’s website for the sunscreen Hall of Shame.
