Recall Round-Up: May 3, 2019

This week in our recurring series, we discuss product recalls for infant rockers and wooden children’s toys, and vehicle recalls for Honda and Mazda.

• Kids II Infant Rockers

  After receiving pressure from the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the CPSC, Kids II recalled nearly 700,000 infant rockers associated with 5 sleep-related deaths. The CPSC believes these products to be deadly and encourages all consumers to immediately stop using this product and other similar infant rockers. Infants that are unrestrained can roll over onto their stomachs and suffocate in a matter of minutes. These Kids II rockers were sold at Target, Walmart and Toys R Us from March 2012 through April 2019. Please contact Kids II at 1-866-869-7954 for a refund.

• Bullseye’s Playground Wooden Toys

  Target announced a voluntary recall of approximately 500,000 wooden toys due to a potential choking hazard. The wooden toys sold exclusively at Target are in the shape of vehicles including a train caboose, Santa’s sleigh, and a police car and are sold in sets of 8. The manufacturer received reports of the wheels detaching from the vehicle which could be a safety risk for small children. No injuries have been reported. Consumers can contact Target at 800-440-0680 for more information on the recall or return the toys to the store for a refund.

• Honda Odyssey

  Honda is recalling 51,000 Odyssey minivans due to a potential rollaway risk. The 2018-2019 minivans are experiencing a reboot the the transmission control unit that automatically shifts the vehicle into park. If done while moving, this shift can damage the parking rod and increase the likelihood of a failure when the driver purposefully shifts into park, thereby increasing the risk of of injury or a crash. Owners should be notified by June 1st when they can begin bringing their vehicle into the dealership for a repair at no cost. If the dealership determines the gear shift and parking rod is severely damaged, a new transmission will be provided. Owners can visit NHTSA online to enter their VIN and determine if their minivan is included in the recall.

• Honda Pilot, Acura and Others

  Honda also announced this month a recall of 94,000 vehicles of many different models due to a timing belt failure. These newer model vehicles may stall while driving which increases the risk of injury, crash and engine damage. No injuries have been reported at this time. The following vehicles are included in this recall: 2018-19 Acura MDX, 2018-19 Honda Pilot, 2019 Acura RLX and RLX Sport Hybrid, 2019 Acura TLX, 2019 Honda Odyssey, and 2019 Honda Ridgeline. Owners will receive notification in early June if their vehicle is included in this recall but may also visit NHTSA online for more information.

• Mazda 3

  Mazda is recalling 190,000 vehicles due to a windshield wiper failure. The 2016-2018 Mazda 3 vehicles were sticking after the manufacturer determined an increase in the metal deposits. The failure reduces driver visibility and increases the risk of an injury or crash. Mazda will begin notifying owners June 3rd and will replace the front wiper control module at no additional cost.
