Lance Cooper, says despite the report “there is still much work to be done.” He says evidence so far shows GM didn’t fix safety issues because of cost — and that the whole truth won’t come until the lawsuits against the automaker are settled.
Auto safety expert Sean Kane says GM’s assurances that there was no conspiracy to cover up the switch issue doesn’t really matter when the problems and failure to fix them occur anyway due to inept managers or bureaucracy.
“I find most of the time that is the underlying problem — not a conspiracy but layers of underlying incompetence,” says Kane, of Safety Research and Strategies. The real change coming out of the GM switch scandal is likely to be stronger enforcement by government regulators, he adds.
